Coventry Half Marathon to be held in March next year

Coventry Editorial 12th Jul, 2018   0

THE Coventry Half Marathon will take place in March next year after the 2018 run was cancelled due to dangerous weather conditions.

The run will be held on Sunday, March 24, when around 3,000 people are expected to hit the city’s streets to aim for personal bests and raise money for local charities.

Thousands were left disappointed in March when organisers called off the event after snow and ice swept the city.

But organisers claim next year’s event will be extra special as it comes during Coventry’s term as European City of Sport.

Organiser Millie McCaughrean from Coventry University Students’ Union said: “After the disappointment of having to cancel this year’s event due to snow we are delighted to announce the 2019 event.

“We can only organise the half marathon with all the fantastic support we get from Coventry charities, organisations and running clubs and we have exciting plans to make next year’s event bigger and better than ever.

“We hope that by announcing the date now, charities will have more time to maximise their fundraising and, of course, give runners time to train.”

Deputy leader of Coventry City Council and cabinet member for events, Abdul Khan, said: “The Coventry Half Marathon is a much-loved event and we are delighted a date has been set so runners can now start to plan their training and choose the charities they wish to support.

“The run raises thousands of pounds for charity and just as importantly brings the people of the city together – people of all ages, races, faiths and backgrounds – to have fun as a community.

“Next year will see us take on the title of European City of Sport and it is also our Year of Wellbeing, when we will be raising the profile of all sport and showing the benefits it has on our physical and mental health, as well as how it can help build a stronger city – and the Half Marathon will be a key part of that.

“I look forward to being there on March 24 and joining the thousands of people cheering on our runners as we make it a day to remember.”
