A FASHION student from Coventry has won the prestigious Warwickshire Art Prize, writes Ryan Oldfield.

Sharandeep Kaur, who is 19 and lives in Cheylesmore, studied A-levels at Bluecoat Sixth-Form before attending the Warwickshire College of Art, based at Royal Leamington Spa College.

Sharandeep is only the 22nd recipient of the award which 35 UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design students were in the running for.

She receives an £850 bursary award to support her studies at the renowned Kingston School of Art in London, where she has been accepted to study Fashion Design.

Sharandeep said, “I was so surprised to find out I’d won the award. I was speechless. I’m really grateful for the award and the bursary.”

The award and bursary scheme is supported by The Arts Society Royal Leamington Spa and decided by tutors at Royal Leamington Spa College.

Sharandeep added her mum first sparked her love for art and cited her year nine textile lessons as the reason for her wanting to go into fashion.

“My mum’s side of the family is quite creative and that’s where I get it from I think.

“I’ve always loved making little cards and paintings and that slowly developed into textiles and fashion.

“My final year project is made from my own first-hand images of my mum, her sisters and cousins in India.

“It looks at growing up in India, the beauty standards and the gender roles that women are obliged to follow.”

The accolade is the longest standing award presented by the Arts Society Leamington which was founded in 1990 and has a grand total of 554 members.

The chairman of the Arts Society Royal Leamington Spa, Shaun Pitt, described her work as ‘wonderful’ and said supporting young people was a fundamental aim of the organisation.

Course leader Adele Christie added Sharandeep had worked so hard and grown in confidence, tackling challenging subject matters.

“Her work is brave.

“It’s very intellectual work, it breaks boundaries and it is backed by strong theoretical research with a great depth of enquiry.”
