ORGANISATIONS in Coventry are uniting to hold events and raise funds for charity in Dementia Awareness Week.
Coventry Central Library, Smithford Way, city centre is joining forces with Alzheimer’s Society to hold interactive activities – including ‘Making Memories – Creative Collaging’.
The activity will encourage people living with dementia and their carers to use memory evoking materials, such as photos, to create a personal and emotive collage.
People will also have the chance to browse through the libraries’ extensive resources – with information on dementia – including books on prescription dementia collection.
The libraries will be open to anyone interested in finding out more information on dementia and local support.
Coventry Alzheimer’s Society is also holding an information stand, with advice on dementia and support, at the Village Hotel on May 16 and May 18 between 10am and 12pm.
According to Alzheimer’s Society, 850,000 people in the UK suffer from dementia. Around two-thirds of those affected are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia.
The charity is urging people for support and to make donations as research is desperately underfunded.
They commented: “Dementia research should receive a level of investment that matches the economic and human cost of the condition. The total cost of dementia to the UK is estimated at £26 billion a year but only £90 is spent on dementia research per patient per year.”
