DESPITE being without a league to race in or a venue they can call home, the Coventry Bees could still feature on track this season in a pre-season challenge fixture against Peterborough.
Peterborough promoter Ged Rathbone said on the Panthers’ website yesterday he still wants Coventry to take to the East of England Showground track on Sunday, March 19.
The two clubs had arranged a pre-season challenge fixture prior to Sunday’s news that the Bees were withdrawn from this year’s SGB Premiership.
However it is hoped the Bees can still appear in front of thousands of their adoring fans this year – with the possibility of further challenge fixtures to take place throughout the season.
Should any fixtures take place, it is hoped 50 per cent of profits made will go to the Bees riders who signed for the club’s 2017 campaign.
Mr Rathbone said: “We hope to be able to press on with the opening meeting against Coventry.
“We’re in the process of speaking to the current Coventry riders and some past riders to see if there is interest in putting a team together.
“We’ll do everything we can to give the Coventry supporters the chance to turn out in force and cheer on their team.
“It’s a short trip over to the East of England Showground for them and I’m sure it is something which would still appeal to Bees fans.
“I know the prospect of taking on an SGB Premiership team has excited our fans so hopefully it will still happen.”
On Friday (March 11), The Coventry Observer will be outside Coventry Stadium from 3.15pm to host a photo-call.
We are calling on all fans of the Coventry Bees – and speedway in general – to show their support for the club and back our #SaveOurClub campaign.
