THE WORK of local artists inspired by UK City of Culture will be showcased in Coventry this spring.
Members from four Coventry art societies will have their work on show at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum as part of CASE: Coventry Art Societies Exhibition (known formerly as the Coventry Arts Consortium).
The month-long celebration of work created by local artists will run from Thursday, April 18 to Sunday, May 19, with free admission.
Artists from the Coventry and Warwickshire Society of Artists, Coventry Art Guild, Coventry Watercolour Society and the Baginton Art Group are invited to submit up to four paintings, sculpture and pottery to go on display.
One artist from each society is invited to form a ‘selection panel’ and they decide which works will be showcased.
This year, artists have been asked to think about Coventry UK City of Culture 2021 and consider painting something with a Coventry theme.
There is, however, no limit on subject choice or size of painting which makes it an extremely exciting exhibition.
CASE chairman, writer and artist Susan Moore works behind the scenes, collaborating between the Gallery and artists.
She said: “The previous exhibitions have been of the highest standard and thought to be some of the best local art exhibitions anywhere in the country. We plan to build on that with the launch of CASE.
“The subject matter and style of each piece is entirely down to the artist, and most work is for sale and we would expect it to attract a range of buyers.
“Visitors will get to see work covering everything from wild animals to local scenes, landscapes and portraits, including one of the Lord Mayor, who agreed to model for the Earlsdon Portrait Group, clothed of course, in his mayor’s attire!
“We’re handing a lot of the responsibility over to our artists, giving them the opportunity not just in deciding what goes on display, but in choosing the winners at the end of it all.”
Visitors to the exhibition will be able to vote for their favourite work of art and the winner will receive an award.
Cultural and creative director at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum Francis Ranford said: “Celebrating our local artists is extremely important to us at the Herbert, and we’re delighted to be dedicating a whole month to CASE this spring.
“Whether artists are experienced or just starting out, this exhibition is designed to encourage and nurture local art and the Societies welcome new members to join.”
