COVENTRY Stampede Wheelchair Rugby club received four youth sports wheelchairs from Wooden Spoon as part of the launch of its junior wheelchair rugby programme.

Coventry Rugby Foundation welcomed members of Wooden Spoon’s board as well as members of the Stampede to the game against Jersey Reds on March 19 and presented the youth chairs before kick off.

The Stampede are forming a junior team at Sherbourne Fields School, with their coaches using the donated chairs to deliver sessions to children with disabilities to get more invested in the sport.

Wooden Spoon is a charity which funds life-changing rugby projects for children. It has supported over 1,300 projects across the UK and Ireland, and has helped 200,000 vulnerable children over the last year.

It has been supporting Coventry Stampede over the past few years.

The activity can be quite expensive as specialised disability sports chairs typically can cost anywhere between £1,000 and £5,000.

Head coach of Coventry Stampede WRC, Mandip Sehmi, said: “We are so grateful for the new chairs Wooden Spoon has provided for our junior team which is forming at Sherbourne Fields School.

“Wheelchair rugby is a sport that can allow people with disabilities to stay fit and healthy and make friends along the way.”
