Charity appeals for mentors to help Coventry young people avoid life of crime

A COVENTRY charity is appealing for mentors to help young people make positive lifestyle choices and move away from anti-social behaviour and crime.

Positive Youth Foundation (PYF) is looking for 120 mentors to volunteer in helping to deliver the Staying Safe programme in schools and communities across the city.

Applicants will need to be aged over 18 and able to volunteer around one to three hours per week – with mentors required to undertake six hours of training before going out into the community, either for a full day or over two evening sessions.

They will work alongside frontline professionals to provide a safe space for young people to understand and address negative behaviours.

Uniform will be provided by PYF and mentors will be supervised by a youth worker at all times.

The programme is being delivered alongside The Partnership for Coventry and Catch 22, and funded by the Early Intervention Youth Fund and the Supporting Families Against Youth Crime Fund.

Krishan Singh, of Positive Youth Foundation, said: “We have already delivered a very successful Staying Safe programme with schools and young people across the city.

“To continue this positive work we are looking for 120 new mentors to support the programme.

“We are looking for people from all over the city, as we look to support every community in Coventry.

“The project will run until 2020 and is a great opportunity for new mentors to make an impact in their communities and help guide the young people from their area in to making positive lifestyle choices.”

Prospective mentors will require DBS checks, however having a criminal record will not automatically exclude a potential mentor from the role. This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants should send a short 250-500 word summary of why they would be suitable for the role to [email protected] to apply.
