BARNARDO’S has opened its first ever ‘Superstore’ charity shop – the biggest in the UK – in Coventry.

The ribbon was cut earlier today on the store on the Central Six Retail Park which is 10,000sq ft and stocks a multitude of items.

Among them are men’s, women’s and children’s clothes, shoes and accessories, along with a range of new and pre-loved household items and electrical ‘white goods’.

A café is also being planned for the new store to give local community groups a place to meet outside of opening hours. It will open in the new year and is the first eatery to be located in the retail park.

Lea McManus, Barnardo’s Store Development and Operations Lead, said: “This is the largest Barnardo’s store anywhere in the UK and we’re all very excited about it.

“While Barnardo’s online shops have proved really popular, there’s a friendly and community feel to coming into a store – even if it is just to have a chat and a browse around.

“There is definitely a move by the public to buy clothes and household items sustainably – and we find people also want to dress to stand out from the crowd.

“That trend has seen a growing interest in our vintage and retro garments and accessories. And you just never know when you’ll pick up a designer bag or coat from us at a bargain price.”

The fun continues into the weekend with a children’s face-painter tomorrow afternoon and a dedicated children’s colouring-in station.

All cash raised through the store will go towards supporting Barnardo’s work with children.

Some Covid measures are in place, such as sanitiser stations and masks, to keep customers safe.

The charity is also keen to hear from people of all ages who are interested in volunteering with Barnardo’s and always welcomes donations of items it can sell.

It runs a free collection service within a five-mile radius for furniture donations. Call 02476 256527 to arrange a pick-up.

Lea added: “We’re hoping lots of Coventry shoppers will call in and pay us a visit.”
