RESIDENTS of Hillfields will see improved street security, with more lampposts and security cameras, a regional police commissioner has said.

West Midlands Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, Waheed Saleem, pledged to improve street security in Hillfields with a £550,000 cash boost.

He hopes residents will see a reduced crime level when they receive home security packs and benefit from more street lighting.

Local residents will also be encouraged to join the local Street Watch group which, the Deputy PCC said is an effective way of preventing crime.

Deputy Leader for Coventry City Council, Abdul Salam Khan, said: “This money is great news for the residents of Hillfields. We are pleased that we have been successful in our bid for the safer streets funding.

“This extra funding stream will help us to make Hillfields a safer and more welcoming part of our City. I am sure residents will welcome the news and want to work in partnership to help us reduce crime and antisocial behaviour in the neighbourhood.”

Coventry Police Superintendent, Phil Healy, said: “This is excellent news for the communities of Hillfields. The funding will support the wider work we are undertaking with our partners within Hillfields, as a partnership we will be working with our local community groups to engage with residents to reduce acquisitive crime within the area.”

The West Midlands Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, Waheed Saleem, said: “I am really pleased that we have been successful in securing over £500,000 to help improve community safety in the Hillfields area of Coventry.

“This funding will help introduce effective crime prevention measures in the community and educate people on what they can do to reduce acquisitive crime.

“As well as using the funding to invest in CCTV and improving street lighting in the area I would also encourage local residents to join Street Watch scheme. Throughout the West Midlands we have seen local residents take an active part in working to reduce crime by joining Street Watch.”
