A TERMINALLY ill ice hockey fan who was granted a lifetime wish to coach his cherished Coventry Blaze has died.

Following a hard-fought battle with cancer, Kevin White – affectionately known as ‘Coach Kev’ – died aged 55.

As we reported on our front page in January, he had been invited onto the bench as coach – racking up a 100 per cent win record.

The ice hockey team paid an emotional tribute, calling him ‘somewhat of an inspiration’ after his spell as coach.

He had always been a dedicated and vocal supporter, with many at the club referring to him as the ‘noisy guy from block eight’.

A club spokesperson said: “The Blaze are saddened to hear of the passing of “Coach Kev”, Kevin White.

“At the side of wife Michelle on Wednesday afternoon, he left us peacefully and in no pain at the age of 55.

“In his own words, he ‘retires with a 100 per cent win-rate and that is something not many other coaches can say’.”

“Our thoughts are with Michelle, Kev’s family and all of his friends.

“On Sunday, before the game versus Cardiff Devils, the Blaze will remember Kev with a minute’s applause.

“‘We love you Coach Kev, we do.'”

Kev had been fighting esophageal cancer for nearly two years – undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, suffering from multiple organ failures and having to rely on a ventilator to keep him alive.

Last August Kev learned his cancer was terminal and had spread to his liver, small bowel and stomach.

But, as with the darkest of clouds, there was a silver lining.

Kev got a chance to stand side-by-side with some of his heroes, being involved with tactical discussions while providing an inspirational boost to the players.

Back in January Kevin, who lived in Bedworth with his family, told the Observer: “The club and fans have been amazing to me and my family in my battle.

“I was told I had until Christmas without treatment or maybe summer with treatment.

“With all the support from my family, friends and Blaze, I will battle as long as I can.”
