A MAN who chased down and rugby-tackled a knife-wielding bank robber in Coventry as he fled the city’s Barclays with a quantity of cash has been presented with a ‘Good Citizen Award’ by West Midlands Police.

John McCarthy was in the bank Fletchampstead Highway on February 15, 2019, when Rashpal Singh entered wearing a mask and carrying a machete.

The robber grabbed a 71-year-old customer and held the weapon to her throat while demanding the cash.

Staff handed over the money but as Rashpal ran out, John chased after him and rugby tackled him. He and another man held him down until our officers arrived.

Nine months later, Rashpal was jailed for six years and nine months.

John, 62, was presented with his award by Chief Constable Sir David Thompson at the West Midlands Police awards ceremony last week.
