Award winning Coventry film coming home with special screening

Coventry Editorial 24th Apr, 2022   0

THE LONG-AWAITED and award-winning film Rudy, a film set and shot in Coventry and rural Warwickshire, will finally get its home premiere over eight years after production began.

The film is directed by BAFTA nominated filmmaker Shona Auerbach and will get a special screening by at 2pm on Sunday, May 8 at The Box.

The screening is a part of CineCov, a 12-month programme which has transformed Coventry into one big cinema as part of the UK City of Culture celebrations.

There will be a question and answer session with Shona and some of the cast after the screening.

The film is a coming of age drama which follows teenage girl (Esther McCormick), whose extra responsibility for her younger siblings and emotions of grief puts her relationship with her father (Darren Day) to the test.

She feels further isolated when a paying guest moves into her home, before she discovers fun, freedom and autonomy when she befriends a boy from Coventry.

Shona said: “I have always had a passion to shoot something locally, and I knew Coventry and Warwickshire would make a great backdrop for a feature film.”

Production on the independent film began in 2013, before going through an eight year post production period.

A small crew from Coventry worked hard to finish the shoot, before Shona and Producer Graeme Dunn put the finishing touches to the film.

Shona added: “I worked on it literally every moment I could, and the time allowed me to give it a real attention to detail.

“This has been a real labour of love for me.”

Rudy finally premiered at the 2021 Birmingham Film Festival, where it won the ‘Best Film’ award.

The film has been praised for its ‘gorgeous cinematography’ which captures Coventry and the nearby countrysides with ‘sun-dappled tenderness’.

Tickets for the screening are £5 each. Visit coventry2021.co.uk/9369 to book tickets for Rudy.
