Anyone for tennis? Free open days at Coventry's University of Warwick centre to mark Wimbledon starting

TO CELEBRATE Wimbledon getting under way on Monday, the University of Warwick Tennis Centre is offering people the chance to pick up a racket and give the sport a go.

The free open days – complete with strawberries and cream – will take place on the next three Saturdays – June 26, July 3 and 10 – from 8am to 1.30pm.

The university’s green spaces will be transformed into tennis courts to enable the event to cater for people of all ages and abilities.

Brad Rowbottom, tennis manager at the University of Warwick Tennis Centre, said: “The past year has been like no other, but we’re all thrilled to have Wimbledon back on our screens this summer – and our open day is a great way for people to celebrate and give this fantastic sport a go.

“Earlier this year, a survey of our members revealed a large majority were keen to try something new this year, so this is the perfect opportunity.

“Whether you’re new to the sport, looking for something fun to try with your children, or keen to practice your serve – there’s something for everyone at our open days.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming local people through the doors for one of our first events since reopening.”

Each day will serve up an hour-long junior tennis taster session aimed at five to 16-year-olds split into three separate age groups.

It will feature a mix of tennis activities, from competition, drills, games and racquet skills exercises. That will be followed by a cardio-based tennis drill session for adults of all levels.

From 11am, the professional coaching team at the tennis centre will be on hand for two hours of adult group coaching, where participants can polish their technique and receive tailored feedback.

All participants will be entered into a prize draw, where they could win free tennis lessons, day passes and Wilson tennis goodies, including t-shirts, tennis balls and wristbands.
