THOSE who lost their lives during the First World War are being honoured in sugar at Charlecote Park this Christmas.
Jana Eastwood, a volunteer at the National Trust property, has created a stunningly detailed gingerbread model of the historic house, complete with replica stained glass windows made from gelatine sheets and icing snow on the roof.
And in a tribute to those who fell in the Great War Jana has included 586 handmade iced poppies that circle the property, run under the gatehouse and up to the front door of the main house.
Jana said: “I decided on a gingerbread house as sugar rations had been relaxed a little by Christmas 1918.
“I picked the house because Charlecote is so much more than just a house, it is a home and it is home where people came back to after the war.”
The 4ft by 4ft model includes 13kg of icing sugar, 7.2kg of flour, 2.4kg of sugar, 1.9kg of butter, 1.2kg of honey and around 24 eggs.
It took some 220 hours to create from planning through to baking and making.
Visitors can view the model at Charlecote Park every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in December, including Christmas Eve. Tickets for the weekend dates must be pre-booked online at www.nationaltrust.co.uk/charlecote-park
