COVENTRY will be awash with Union Flags next weekend as residents across the city celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

On Thursday, June 2, at 9pm a Beacon will be lit at the Coventry Cathedral ruins, which will coincide with similar lightings the same time across the commonwealth to mark the historic moment.

On Friday, June 3, from 11am to 3pm, there will be plenty of free Platium Jubilee-themed fun at the Lower Precinct shopping centre.

It will feature a crown-making workshop, face-painting, a visit from Lenny the Lion and free goodies.

On Saturday, June 4, there will be live music in Broadgate, outside Coventry Central Library and on the balcony of the HMV Empire.

There will also be a street theatre and a make-and-take marquee all on display, while children will be able to complete an art trail.

Children can download a trail sheet and answer questions as they follow it.

The fun will take place between 11am and 4pm, while Coventry’s libraries will also be holding the Big Jubilee Read.

On Sunday, June 5, the first bands in the park event of the year will take place in the War Memorial Park between 2pm and 3.30pm.

The Jaguar Land Rover Band will be entertaining crowds and people are encouraged to bring a picnic and chairs to celebrate The Big Jubilee Lunch.

Assembly Festival Garden

Throughout the weekend, all the major national events taking place for the Platinum Jubilee will be broadcast on a huge outdoor screen at the Assembly Festival Garden.

The Assembly Garden is free to enter and is an ideal space for people to come together and witness the events taking place across the country.

The Garden will be splendidly decorated and have an array of food vendors and a well-stocked bar to keep everyone refreshed throughout.

It is also the venue for people in the city to join the Jubilee City Street Party.

At 10am on Thursday, June 2, Trooping the Colour will be screened – the event, which brings together 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians every June to mark the Queen’s birthday – will be screened.

On Friday morning, June 3, The Platinum Jubilee: A Service of Thanksgiving featuring senior members of the Royal Family will be shown

On Saturday evening, June 4, The Platinum Party at the Palace – bringing together the World’s biggest entertainers to perform in front of Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace – will be shown.

From 2.30pm on Sunday, June 5, The Platinum Jubilee Pageant in the Mall will take place, featuring an awe-inspiring international parade and carnival. The Pageant will combine street arts, theatre, music, circus, carnival and costume to celebrate Her Majesty’s unwavering duty, love of the natural world and dedication to the Commonwealth.
