98-year-old to sell designer wardrobe to help great-granddaughter achieve her ambition

A DOTING great- grandma is parting with her beloved designer wardrobe to send her great-granddaughter on the trip of a lifetime.

Kirsty Horton from Stratford needs some £4,000 to fulfill her dream of helping communities in Africa.

And 98-year-old Irene, who lives in Knowle, has vowed to help her.

Fashion-loving Irene now has little opportunity to wear her extensive collection although does still sometimes enjoy ‘glamming up’.

Kirsty’s mum – Irene’s granddaughter – says the pensioner is sometimes told off by her family for even now slipping on her high heels.

But Irene – a keen traveller herself – is willing to give it all up to help 14-year-old Kirsty jet off to help others in Tanzania.

From Niagra Falls and the Great Wall of China to the Amazon and Australia, Irene has visited some 30 countries and said she only stopped at the age of 80 ‘when her suitcase got too heavy to carry’.

And Kirsty who goes to Studley High, is hoping to travel to East Africa to volunteer with humanitarian projects.

Kirsty said: “I will be rebuilding houses, picking up litter from the coastlines, helping in schools supplying water and more.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity that I’m determined to experience.

“It will look great on my college and university applications too. It really will be amazing.”

The sale will take place at the United Reform Church on Rother Street on Thursday (December 6) from 11.30am.
