A recent report from Enterprise Nation has cited Coventry as the best location to start up a new enterprise.
With more and more people looking for increased freedom and autonomy in the workplace. Early-stage entrepreneurship is on the rise across the country and it seems this is particularly true when it comes to Coventry.
The city has seen the launch of more businesses over the last year relative to its population than any other UK city and in 2022, the city saw a 13 per cent increase in the number of businesses launched.
Coventry is no stranger to innovation and regeneration and there are myriad reasons for the city’s newly found place at the epicentre of the UK’s entrepreneurial growth.
Private sector investments
Coventry has seen considerable private sector investment in public realm schemes and commercial developments. The business district of Friargate is a transformative new destination with the intention of creating a mixed-use area with a focus on business and education.
Frigate is set to become a major business hub with modern office spaces, attracting both national and international companies with a particular focus on technology and knowledge-based industries.
Investments in retail
Numerous changes have taken place to transform Coventry’s public spaces. A huge £57m has been invested in Coventry since 2011, allowing significant developments to the city’s public spaces.
Shopping precincts and areas such as the marketplace and West Orchard Shopping Centre have seen huge regeneration. Impressive water features and art installations have turned the once run-down malls and precincts into somewhere potential customers want to visit and shop thus strengthening the economic prosperity of the region when it comes to retail.
On average, the annual rent for Retail Space in Coventry is just over £20 per square foot. Compare this to London’s £49 and it quickly becomes apparent as to why small boutiques and independently owned shops are springing up around the centre.
Furthermore, a world-class retail environment with provision for new shops, cafés and restaurants is set to be developed shortly as part of recent improvements to the Coventry City South Area.
A well-connected city
Whilst the city does have its own small airport on Rowley Road, it is primarily used for cargo and those travelling into Coventry for business will typically fly to Birmingham, the largest airport in the West Midlands.
With direct trains running every 30 minutes and the airport only a ten-mile drive away, this accessibility remains a key factor in attracting business and overseas clients to the area.
As a result of the increased business traffic to the area, the station has needed extensive development. A recent investment of £ 82 million was used to improve accessibility and capacity and meet current and projected future passenger growth.

Transport links are set to improve even further with plans to introduce the Coventry Very Light Rail Service (CVLR).
This new transport initiative will provide an efficient and environmentally friendly service to reduce congestion and enhance connectivity within the city for both residents and visitors.
Councillor Jim O’Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Regeneration and Climate Change, said: “By creating a new, clean and green form of transport, this investment is securing jobs in Coventry and, as in other cities which have installed light rail, will support regeneration in local areas.”
City of Culture
Coventry’s recognition as the city of culture in 2021 certainly put it on the map and drew further attention both nationally and internationally.
Several factors contributed to the city receiving the award including its rich cultural heritage and vibrant arts scene. However, much attention was drawn to the fact that Coventry has been a hub for regeneration and development.
City of culture status has since provided an opportunity for the city to further invest in its cultural infrastructure. This has further boosted Coventry’s multicultural offerings in turn appealing to a diverse range of businesses and organisations across the world.
University links
The proximity of developments such as Friargate to Coventry University make them an ideal hub for innovative partnerships through the fusion of academia and research with industry.
The university boasts an award-winning track record when it comes to industry engagement and has developed an impressive programme to co-create with innovation partners.
Such programmes are responsible for bringing fresh talent and new ideas to existing companies whilst developing industry-ready graduates who will become the next generation of innovators and pioneers.
Despite growing costs for UK businesses and rising inflation and interest rates, the latest Companies House records show that 202,130 new businesses were set up in the UK in the first 12 weeks of 2023 with numbers firmly on the rise. With constant investment, a world-class transport network and a commitment to sustainable living, it seems there’s no better place for these startups than in Coventry.
