A FORMER city soldier is preparing for a 2,000 mile trip on a 50cc scooter to raise cash for two charities.
Ray Howard wants to raise £6,000 for Help For Heroes and Coventry's Mercia MS Therapy Centre when he sets out on his mission to ride across four famous UK bridges in just two days in March.
His trip will see him leave Coventry at 4am on Monday, March 1 before crossing the Severn Bridge on the Welsh border and moving on to the Dartford Bridge in Kent.
After crossing the River Thames on the Woolwich Ferry, Mr Howard will the ride to the Humber Bridge in Hull, the fifth largest suspension bridge in the world.
The following day Mr Howard will travel over the Scottish border to Edinburgh's Firth of Forth Bridge, before travelling back to Coventry.
Mr Howard, from Broad Lane, is doing the two day marathon trip on a scooter loaned by Coventry Motorcycles & Scooter, with ten per cent of the money raised going to the Mercia MS Therapy Centre and the rest going to Help for Heroes, which provides better facilities for wounded British troops.
He said: "I was 22 years in the army which is why I'm trying to raise money for Help For Heroes, and I've got three friends in the war at the moment.
"Me and my wife, Jill, have already raised £3,500 doing a bike ride from Selly Oak Hospital where the wounded soldiers go for treatment to Downing Street but this time I want to raise £6,000."
