  • Firefighter's marathon task ahead

    Lianne Ryan Share

    09 February 2010

A CITY fireman has set himself a marathon challenge to raise money for charity.
Alex Shapland has never ran a marathon before, but this year he plans to run the Duchy Marathon, followed by the Coventry Half Marathon and The Great North Run, before heading to the Big Apple to compete in the New York Marathon.
The 27-year-old, from Tile Hill, has took up the challenge to raise more than £2,500 for The Firefighters Charity, which provides care and support for firefighters injured in the line of duty.
Alex, based at Foleshill Fire Station, said he had always wanted to run the London Marathon but despite applying several times, he had never secured a place, so when he was offered the chance to run the New York Marathon he jumped at the chance.
"The Firefighters Charity is one which lies close to my heart, so when I decided to run the New York Marathon, I thought why not do a few more to help train for the marathon and boost funds for the Firefighters Charity," he said.
Alex, a regular runner, plans to train six times a week before taking on the 26.3 mile Duchy Marathon in Cornwall next month. And in between training Alex will be teaming up with colleagues to wash cars, pack shopping at supermarkets, and host charity golf days to raise money for the charity.
He has also appealedd for city businesses to come forward and sponsor his marathon challenge.
