CITY charity Global Care launched an emergency appeal this week to raise £50,000 to supply immediate support to those affected by the devastating cyclone which struck Burma at the weekend.
Over 22,000 were killed and 40,000 remain missing in the wake of Cyclone Nargis, which savaged Burma's Irrawaddy delta on Saturday.
United Nations aid agencies have started negotiations with Burma's military government in a bid to relax restrictions and allow aid teams into the country.
Global Care, an international development charity based in Dugdale Road, has worked in the captial of Burma, Yangon, for five years.
The charity supports a small orphanage in the capital, formerly known as Rangoon, together with a training centre for 24 students and a day centre/nursery for poor children.
Yangon has been declared a disaster zone by the Burma authorities in the wake of the cyclone, with reports suggesting thousands of homes, roads and other buildings have been damaged or destroyed. Electricity and water supplies have also been cut off.
Ron Newby, chief executive officer and founder of Global Care, said the charity had started to assess how best it can help through its partners in Yangon, and remained extremely concerned for the safety of the children it supports and the wider community.
Cash raised by Global Care's appeal aims to provide emergency shelter, water and food.
"Life is hard enough in Burma, due to economic crisis and political turmoil," Mr Newby said. "This cyclone disaster, destroying lives, homes and livelihoods, will make life almost impossible for many of the survivors.
"We know these people desperately need our help, effectively delivered through our partners in Burma to those who need it the most," he added.
"Please support our appeal today."
