  • Pillar celebrating city's twins returns

    Michael Green

    12 May 2008

KINGSTON, Bologna, Warsaw, Kiel – the pillar containing the signs pointing to all Coventry’s twin cities has been returned to the city.
The monument was opened by the Queen Mother in 1990 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of The Blitz.
The circular metal sign at the top of the Twin City pillar which lists all Coventry’s 26 twin cities has been re-patented in Shropshire.
With the £20 million redevelopment and extension of The Herbert in Jordan Well in the city centre due to be completed later in the year, the pillar was put back in place in the Peace Gardens.
Roger Vaughan, The Herbert's city arts and heritage officer, said now the pillar was back a stone mason could repair chips to ensure it was returned to pristine condition.
"The refurbishment has meant countless artefacts and items of interest have been in storage but this has also been a great opportunity to clean and repair certain objects,” he added.
"Coventry has 26 twin cities throughout the world from Kingston in Jamaica and Bologna in Italy to Warsaw in Poland and Kiel in Germany, and all are represented on the pillar.
"A compass was used to make sure the twin cities are all pointing in the right direction."
The Enfolding Statue, depicting two figures moulded together in an embrace, has also returned to The Herbert after being removed during building work.
