FAIR trade campaigners have launched an ambitious bid to climb the equivalent of a mountain at their city centre shop.
Up to 1,000 people are needed to scale the 20 stairs at the Fair Trade shop in City Arcade in a bid to 'climb' the Tanaka mountain in Guatemala where fair trade coffee is produced.
Volunteers are calling on shoppers and workers to get involved as part of fair trade fortnight which starts on Monday and runs until March 10.
The team, based above CLC Bookshops, even hope to set up a base camp outside and will get climbers to sample some of the coffee produced at the mountain.
Pam Cavendish, who manages the Fair Trade shop, said: “The people who produce the coffee scrape the most basic living from coffee and honey on the side of a volcano.
"All we have to do is find the jar of coffee on the shelves at in the shop.
"Everyone can record their stair climb on our mountain chart which will hopefully total the height of the mountain where the coffee comes from by the end of the fortnight.”
