One of the workers who stumbled across the medieval well in Grove Street car park.
A RARE medieval well has been uncovered during maintenance work at a city centre car park.
Workmen stumbled across the well which was mostly filled in and dry while laying new heating pipes at Grove Street car park.
They also unearthed some ornate carved stones which experts believe could have been the side of a tomb in a monastery.
Archaeologists from Leicester University have been working with the the city council’s conservation officer Chris Patrick to investigate the origin and history of the finds.
The council said on Tuesday a full archaeological survey of the well had been completed so the works could continue, but added efforts were being made to find any other historical items in the area.
Mr Patrick said: "This is an interesting find and reminds us of Coventry’s medieval past.
"Using carved stones to cap a well off is quite unusual but it has led to the carvings being relatively protected from damage.
"These stones may have formed part of an important door or even fireplace. Another option for what it might be is the side of a tomb from one of the monasteries, perhaps Whitefriars."
