A RESTAURANT owner has labelled thieves the lowest of the low after they stole from a charity collection box.

Blue Bistro boss Peter Dunkley was shocked to find his Cathedral Restoration Fund collection - along with a number of key items - had been stolen in a raid last month.

Also taken was a collection box for the Myton Hospices, and he is now hoping to replace the stolen donations by giving away three-course meals to two lucky winners in a charity raffle.

Mr Dunkley, who opened the Spon Street venue 16 months ago, said there was "tens rather than hundreds" in the tin and he now hoped to raise £500.

"The burglary was a real shock," he said.

"They took the safe, a mac laptop and damaged a window - the worrying thing was they seemed to know where to look.

"But those who steal charity boxes are truly the lowest of the low.

"Our patrons have contributed money to the Hospice to support its work and have been horrified at the theft."

The restaurant's raffle will see three-course meals for two with wine and a welcoming glass of fizz on offer.

One meal for two will be given out for the largest donation, with another for the winning raffle ticket.

Myton’s chief executive Kate Lee welcomed the fund-raising efforts and said the charity was sorry to hear about the break-in.

"The funds had been kindly donated and it is upsetting to think that there are people out there who would steal from such a worthy cause.

"We would like to thank the staff and customers for their efforts in supporting Myton and hope the raffle to replace the funds will be a success.

"We hope this won’t put people off having one of our collection tins in the future as they raise £50,000 a year for us."
