THE INTRODUCTION of a lower speed limit at an accident blackspot in Walsgrave has been welcomed by a leading campaigner to improve safety for local residents.
Coun Ed Ruane has previously described the roundabout on the A4600 Hinckley Road/Leicester Road at the junction of Hinckley Road and Brade Drive a death trap and has been campaigning for urgent changes following a series of accidents.
The Observer reported on the most recent in September last year when a car crashed into the Mount Pleasant pub, in Hinckley Road, after losing control on the roundabout.
And now city council have revealed plans to lower the existing 40mph speed limit to 30mph in order to cut down on accidents in the future.
“It is very good news,” Coun Ruane told the Observer.
“I know local residents will be pleased and I also know the owner of the Mount Pleasant pub will also be happy but I do hope more can be done to solve the on-going situation."
The proposed 30mph limit will begin approximately 600 metres north-east of the junction with Ansty Road and Woodway Lane and continue to around 800 metres north-east of that junction.
Coun Ruane added: "A reduction of the speed limit is something that will contribute towards making the area safer but there is a long term plan to improve and re-design the roundabout.
"People find it difficult to negotiate the roundabout and some even struggle to get on.
"I know the council haven't got too much money to spend on an expansion but there are plans with the potential new hospital proposal that could improve the area with the help of funding."
Henley ward councillor Kevin Maton, who is also chairman of the council's planning committee, described it is excellent news for both motorists and residents.
