Petition launched over new 801 bus service

A PETITION has been launched over a revamped city-wide bus service.

The new 801 route, operated by Travel de Courcey from April, will replace the 701 and provide direct links around the city including the University of Warwick, University Hospital and the Arena Shopping Centre.

But it will also avoid areas of Allesley Park, including three stops up to the Winsford Avenue terminus.

A Centro spokesman said the three stops would be served by the number 2 to the city centre, which could be used as a 'short hop' to the Winsford Avenue shops.

He blamed time constraints, but said it would be monitored.

But Whoberley councillor Bally Singh, who launched the petition, said: "To deny residents living at the top of Allesley Park a direct circular route to the hospital is unfair.

"Because the 801 bus will travel to the hospital, the high proportion of elderly residents at the top of the estate will miss out on a direct route.

"For Centro to expect possible elderly or frail passengers to hop on and off buses at the bottom of Winsford Avenue shows a complete detachment from reality.

"This needs to be looked at again and we need some common sense to prevail."

The petition will be available to sign in shops in the area.
