Firm win £36m contract to rebuild crumbling Coventry schools

THE CONTRACT for a multi-million pound plan to rebuild six schools has been handed out.

Wates Construction will rebuild six city schools in a £36m deal.

Four crumbling primary schools, one secondary and a special school were all told they would be rebuilt in the coming years under the national Priority School Building Programme.

President Kennedy Secondary School was also named in the scheme but will be rebuilt in a separate privately-financed deal.

The construction firm will also carry out a £13m contract to expand five primary schools in a bid to keep up with the city's spiralling population.

Bosses said they would now work with the Education Funding Agency (EFA) and the schools to develop designs for the new facilities ahead of the start of building work.

Managing director for the Midlands region, Phil Harrison, said the company was delighted to have been named main contractor.

"This programme of works calls for a great deal of efficiency without a compromise on quality and our extensive expertise in producing innovative solutions in order to create outstanding education facilities places us as a trusted partner to the EFA."

The six schools set to be rebuilt by Wates are primaries Whitmore Park, St Thomas More, Wyken Croft and Richard Lee, secondary school Ernesford Grange and Alice Stevens Special School.
