A STUDENT took a date at the movies to a whole new level after springing a surprise proposal on his girlfriend.
Richard Jay had been seeing partner Sophie Fox for just six months, but the teenage couple had already begun discussing the possibility of tying the knot.
And with the help of cinema bosses at the Odeon Skydome complex he set up the perfect proposal, popping the question to Sophie in front of a packed audience before a mid-week 3D screening of The Hobbit.
"I had planned with the cinema previously for a fake trailer to play in front of the movie," Richard told the Observer.
"It began with the Universal logo appearing on the screen like any usual trailer and was then followed by a black screen with a quote by Ernest Hemingway about love while Clair De Lune played softly in the background.”
With the audience gripped and his partner in shock, then came the moment Richard had been planning with cinema bosses weeks in advance.
"I remember my heart beating the fastest I have ever felt it beat when I saw the beginning of the fake movie trailer play because I knew this was it.
"The screen then slowed to a single picture of the two of us kissing under fire works while Iron and Wine's song played and as Flightless Bird American Mouth played, I proceeded to get down on one knee and ask the question.
"As soon as the images of ourselves flashed up on the screen I saw Sophie's face light up with joy and embarrassment because I'd added a few funny photos to the video too.
"But as I got down on one knee I saw her eyes begin to well up and seeing that smile on her face when she said yes made it all worth it.
"After Sophie said yes the whole theatre applauded we kissed and the screen once again burst in to a slides how of images of ourselves with the Muse version of Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You playing in the background."
The couple have yet to set a date but are already planning their perfect wedding day.
And Richard paid a special tribute to the staff at the cinema who helped plan his special moment.
He added: "They were a really big help. I sent them an email detailing my plans and they were very quick to respond.
"We were even given free tickets to the showing of the movie where the proposal took place.
"I was lucky I was able to keep it a surprise as we could have almost missed the proposal video since Sophie usually likes to skip the trailers at the cinema, but I managed to convince her to take our seats early."
