Punter bags £2,000 after predicting Sky Blues' miracle comeback

IT WASN'T just the Coventry City faithful who were celebrating last night after one lucky punter predicted the Sky Blues' miraculous comeback - and netted £2,000.

With City 2-1 down and their game with Preston North End heading into injury time, one Betfair gambler placed £2 on Mark Robins' men to win at 999-1, the maximum odds available with the top bookie.

The away side were backed at 1-100 - the lowest odds available - and were just minutes away from reaching the area final of the Johnstones Paint Trophy.

But moments later skipper Carl Baker blasted his side level before new signing Leon Clarke bagged the winner and sent the Ricoh faithful into raptures.

The lucky fan was joined by other Betfair customers in thinking the turnaround was on, with the firm revealing others backed City at odds ranging from 899-1 to 989-1.

The Sky Blues were also available to back at 41-1 after they equalised - with the likely option of penalty kicks backed at 1-20.

It leaves City within touching distance of a visit to the new Wembley stadium, and a Betfair spokesman confirmed the club are now 11-8 favourites to pick up the winner's trophy.

Alex Bake told us: “At 2-1 down with two minutes of injury time already played, it looked as though Preston were a nailed-on certainty to make it through to the next round.

“But Coventry staged a miraculous fightback, with one optimistic punter placing £2 on them to win at the maximum Betfair odds of 999-1, with others striking bets between at prices ranging from 899-1 to 989-1.

“After Thursday’s stunning performance Coventry are now favourites to win the competition.”
