COVENTRY is set to see a rise in its student population after the city university saw a rise in applications of 18 per cent compared to the same point in 2012.
It released the figures this week, claiming it bucked the trend nationally where applications are down 5.6 per cent on average.
Many of last year's intake were charged the full £9,000 for the first time after the huge rise in tuition fees introduced by the coalition government.
The university introduced a variable fee scale which saw different courses charge different amounts, while core textbooks and materials were included as part of the tuition fee rather an added cost.
There has also seen a rise of over 50 per cent in postgraduate applications.
Vice-chancellor Professor Madeleine Atkins said: “We are still at an early stage in the applications cycle, but these are positive signs that Coventry’s fair fee policy and much-improved standings in the league tables are setting the university apart from the competition.
“We felt setting variable fees based on the actual cost of delivering the course was the only fair answer to the changes to the higher education fee system."
