PLANS to knock down an old bakery and build student housing have been axed.
Pails Bakery in Craven Street, Chapelfields, was under threat of becoming a 13-bedroom accomodation in a planning application submitted to Coventry City Council.
But that has now been withdrawn at the agent SPG Design's request.
The Observer understands the plans were set to be recommended for rejection by planning officers.
Over 150 people had signed a petition against the demolition. They claimed the area was already overcrowded.
Ward councillor Bally Singh branded the decision a victory for common sense.
"The Pails bakery building has become a much loved land mark in the local community.
"Chapelfieds is designated a special conservation area because of the area’s unique blend of historic buildings dating back to the watchmaking industry.
"The demolition of the building would have stripped a part of the community’s soul."
He added locals were willing to work with developers on future plans.
"The strength of local feeling against the current plans is clear.
"However, the community in Chapelfields are not against all future development – they just want to see the Pails Bakery building protected for future generations."
