FREE parking is being offered to shoppers in the run-up to Christmas.

From today (Monday), council-run car parks will be free from 3pm on weekdays. The offer will run from Monday to Friday until Christmas Eve.

The car parks in the offer are West Orchards, Barracks, Cox St, Salt Lane, Bishop St, Cheylesmore, New Union St, Gosford St, Grosvenor Rd, Lower Ford St, Manor House Drive and Whitefriars St.

Coun Lynnette Kelly, cabinet member for city development, said: "We wanted to do something and do it fast – and I think this offer will help to support both local people and city centre shops.

"These are difficult economic times and I hope this move will help ease the pressure in the build-up to Christmas."
