Primary schools to get bigger under £30million plan

TWELVE primary schools will be extended as part of a £30million bid to resolve shortage of places.

The city council had looked to develop 20 by September 2014, but it revealed on Wednesday that had been cut.

One of the schools - Wyken Croft - set to be rebuilt under a government scheme will have four class groups in each year.

The other 11 are Aldermoor Farm, Broad Heath, Clifford Bridge, Corpus Christi, Coundon, Frederick Bird, Hollyfast, Little Heath, Moat House, Parkhill and Whitley Abbey.

Councillors approved the publication of statutory notices to expand 12 of the schools at a meeting on Tuesday (December 11).

They said the move was in response to a rising birth rate in the city, with increased migration rates also playing a part. To meet rising pressure 615 new places across 28 schools have already been created in the last four years.

The eight left out of the expansion plan is Ernesford Grange, Keresley Grange, Mount Nod, Pearl Hyde, Potters Green, Sowe Valley, St Christopher's and Walsgrave.

Coun David Kershaw, cabinet member for education, said the proposals were the best way to meet future demand.

"The evidence we have indicates there will be a continued pressure for places on primary schools in terms of the numbers children seeking places in reception classes over the next few years.

"We must take heed of that forecast and act now by working to ensure we have sufficient places of high quality in the reception year of our schools in the future."
