A ZEBRA crossing has been installed at a controversial city centre junction.

The shared space junction at Hales Street and The Burges has seen the crossing put in place after councillors agreed the changes last month.

The site is where pensioner David Thompson was hit by a bus at the start of the year. The 71-year-old died in hospital a month later.

The council said numerous changes to the city centre had been made in response to consultation with traders including West Orchards and Deeley - which owns the Belgarde Plaze.

Coun Lindsley Harvard said: "In response to extensive consultation we agreed to introduce throughout the city centre 15 new zebra crossings and Hales Street is one of those."

We reported last month how five other junctions with shared space principles have also been agreed as part of £2.8million-worth of work.
