THOUSANDS of counterfeit cigarettes were seized by police in Far Gosford Street.

Among the finds in several raids were 5,500 cigarettes from Al Quds. Two bikes, an iPad and an iPhone all believed to be stolen were also taken from the shop.

A laptop and counterfeit tobacco was seized from Benny's Restaurant and Takeaway in the same street and a man was also arrested at the venue on suspicion of immigration offences.

Sergeant Richard Hobbs said: "This was a joined up operation carried out in partnership with Trading Standards and based on intelligence we have received in recent weeks.

"As a result of these raids we have been able to confiscate a large number of cigarettes and other items we believe may have been stolen during burglaries.

"This is proof that intelligence from the community can assist us with our work and we would ask anyone who witnesses any suspicious activity to contact police as soon as possible."

Anyone with information about suspicious activity should contact police on 101, or call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
