RICHARD Lee Primary School - which is set to be fully rebuilt - welcomed Olympic star David Moorcroft.
The morale boosting visit saw the Coventry-born runner host a special assembly on Tuesday morning.
In May, government bosses announced the school was one of seven in the city which would be rebuilt over the next few years.
In the run-up to the announcement, one education minister described the school in Wyken as being in one of the worst conditions in the country.
And new head teacher Carol Brammer, who took over from Nicola Harwood in the summer, admitted it was tough to keep spirits up.
"There's always a threat of floods and leaks, and while we've done as much as we can, there is always that concern we are vulnerable," she said.
"But there are really exciting possibilities here. Parents and everyone involved has worked really hard to fight for this school which is really impressive."
And she added Mr Moorcroft's visit would keep the children inspired.
"The nation felt lifted by the Olympics and the against all odds attitude at the Paralympics.
"We took that believe to achieve attitude on as a theme this year and having David Moorcroft here is part of that."
