Olympic Rings go up as countdown to Games begins

A LARGE set of Olympic Rings have been put up in the city.

At 8m wide by 4m high, the iconic five aluminium rings have been put up at a number of locations around the country including the Rowley Green roundabout outside the Ricoh.

Daniel Gidney, chief executive of what will be known as the City of Coventry Stadium for the duration of the Games, said: "We are extremely proud the iconic Olympic Rings will be situated outside the City of Coventry Stadium to welcome thousands and thousands of visitors to the city and the venue.

"It is a visible symbol of the world’s greatest sporting event taking place here in the Midlands."

The five rings are coloured blue, yellow, black, green and red – representing the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games.

They are one of the world’s most recognisable logos.

The first football matches take place in Coventry on Wednesday, July 25 when Japan's women's team take on Canada in a double header which also sees Sweden's women take on South Africa.

Japan v Honduras (5pm)

Senegal v UAE (7.45pm)
