PUTTING on a theatre production is often seen as something of a gamble and none more so as Coventry Musical Theatre Society tackle one of Broadway's biggest musical comedies.
With a cast of 50, an orchestra of 12 and a backstage crew of dozens, Guys and Dolls promises to dazzle and entertain audiences of all ages when it opens at the Belgrade Theatre later this month.
Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City, this oddball romantic comedy - considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy - soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to a cast of vivid characters who have become legends in musical theatre history.
"It’s a brilliant production to stage, a lavish full scale Broadway musical comedy with all the trimmings," said director Steve Boden.
"The characters are all larger than life and great fun to play and rehearsals have been such fun."
Steve is directing his eighth musical for the company, which has won five Best Musical awards at recent National Operatic and Dramatic Society awards.
Playing the lead role of Sarah Brown, the upright but uptight mission doll out to reform the evildoers of Time Square, is society regular Alison Hill and Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love, is played by Steve Bingham.
Hannah Farquharson who has recently completed a three-year musical theatre course in London plays Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she's been engaged to the same man for 14 years, while and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fiancé, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game is played by Andy Watts.
Guys and Dolls is on the Main Stage at the Belgrade Theatre from Thursday, June 21 to Saturday, June 23 with performances at 7.45pm on all three nights and matinées at 3pm on Thursday and 2.30pm Saturday.
Tickets are priced from £12.50 and are available on www.belgrade.co.uk or by calling the box office on 024 7655 3055.
