OVER 50 firefighters have tackled a blaze at a car parts firm in Canley this afternoon (Wednesday).
The fire at the UYT Ltd factory in Coventry Business Park needed 12 fire engines and 58 firefighters to bring under control. Six tackled the flames from inside the building.
Cooling oil is thought to be behind the one-and-a-half-hour blaze, which started in a top floor mezzanine switch room in the three-storey building, according to a West Midlands Fire Service spokeswoman.
It is unclear how much damage the fire has inflicted.
A call went into the fire service just after 1pm, with staff at the firm on Renown Avenue evacuated before firefighters arrived.
They are still on the scene but the fire has been extinguished and they are venting the area, the spokeswoman added.
She said an initial vehicle from Canley Station called for major backup after reaching the fire.
Vij Randeniya, chief fire officer, said: “I am delighted with the speed and efficiently demonstrated by my firefighters and fire control staff.
"The fact that we were able to mobilise so quickly and tackle this fire within such a short space of time really is great news, not only for the factory’s owners and workers, but the local community as a whole.
"I am also delighted to hear that a sprinkler system was installed at the premises. This, alongside a skilled firefighting response, played a significant role in minimising the impact and spread of the fire."
