A FILM which follows French footballer Zinedine Zidane through the duration of a game is being shown in the UK for the first time as part of an exhibition by the Turner Prize-winning artist Douglas Gordon.
Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait is one of two highly acclaimed moving image installations by the artist being shown for the first time together as part of his Maestros exhibition at the Mead Gallery at Warwick Arts Centre from May 1 to June 23.
It was shot during a game between Real Madrid and Villareal on April 23, 2005 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and was filmed in real time using 17 synchronized cameras.
During the last minutes of the match, Zidane was sent off as a result of a brawl.
The film was inspired by Hellmuth Costard’s 1971 film Football As Never Before in which Costard used eight 16mm film cameras to follow George Best, in real time, for the course of an entire game between Manchester United and Coventry City.
Also part of Maestros is Feature Film in which a camera hones in on conductor James Conlon as he leads the Paris Opera Orchestra in a performance of Bernard Herrmann’s famous score for Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo.
In both works the maestros are immersed in their own space, performing with and at the same time abstracted from the players around them.
