FORMER Olympic athlete Dave Moorcroft OBE has given his backing to a national charity that offers services to sports projects in the West Midlands.

Coventry-born Moorcroft has joined Sported as a regional ambassador, which will see him attend events for projects it supports.

Sported is the leading UK sport for development charity supporting community groups, and is aimed at helping voluntary and community sports groups become more business savvy and sustainable.

Moorcroft, who also holds the position of chairman of the West Midlands Leadership Group for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic

Games and holder of the 3,000m UK record, said: "I am delighted to accept the invitation to become a Regional Ambassador for Sported.

"Sport has a huge potential to help individuals and communities develop and the focus Sported has of developing people from disadvantaged communities through sport and physical activity is one I fully support."

Sported is now accepting membership from groups across the region and anyone part of a group that wants to apply for free membership should visit sported.org.uk
