Month-long delays as A45 bridge repaired

MOTORISTS will see month-long delays while sections of an old bridge near Coventry are re-built.

Part of the Ryton River Bridge, which carries A45 London Road traffic over the River Avon in Ryton on Dunsmore, will be demolished after a 15-metre section on the northbound side had deteriorated.

Highways Agency chiefs said they had no choice but to demolish and replace part of the Grade-II Listed structure in order to maintain a safe surface for motorists.

Narrow lanes and a reduced speed limit have already put in place as a precaution.

The work, which will take place between 8am and 6pm, will start on Monday (February 27) and be completed by the end of March.

One lane will be closed on the northbound carriageway into Coventry during the works.

A full overnight closure of the carriageway will also take place on Monday and diversions will be in place.

Highways Agency project manager, Mark Collins said: "The condition of this particular section of the sandstone bridge is such that there is no option but to demolish and replace around 15m of the structure.

"We acknowledge the work will cause delays to journeys so thank motorists in advance for their patience, and suggest they look at alternative routes if appropriate.

"These works will result in a return to a fully open carriageway with 50mph speed limits and a safer bridge crossing for both traffic and pedestrians."
