Million pound alcohol swoop in Coventry

Continuing action by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to crackdown on alcohol smuggling has led to the seizure of nearly 63,000 litres of beer, 91,300 litres of vodka and over 12,130 litres of wine in Coventry.

The haul was uncovered at an industrial unit in the centre of the city on Tuesday (February 12). The revenue loss on the goods, through unpaid duty, is over £1 million – money stolen from public funds.

The beer included brands such as Tennants, Carlsberg, Kronenberg and Red Stripe and the wine included brands such as Echo Falls and Blossom Hill. The vodka was all branded Dannoff.

Adrian Farley Assistant Director of Criminal investigation for HMRC, said: “We have active and effective teams operating across the West Midlands to deter and disrupt those dealing in illicit alcohol. We will seize the goods and individuals may face criminal prosecution. This illegal trade has a devastating effect on legitimate retailers having to compete with black market traders."  

He added: "We would appeal to local people and businesses to join us in the fight against crime and encourage anyone with information relating to illegally imported goods or tax evasion and fraud to contact the Customs Hotline on 0800 59 5000 or email: customs.hotline@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk."

No arrests have currently been made. Investigations are ongoing pending potential criminal proceedings.
