Football
Manchester United star hoping to make an impression at Coventry

OLIVER Norwood is confident he has what it takes to break into the Sky Blues first team after signing on loan from Manchester United.

The 20-year-old became Andy Thorn's third signing of the January transfer window on Tuesday night, following the arrival of fellow loanee Alex Nimley and experienced full-back Hermann Hreidarsson.

Norwood, who has represented Northern Ireland on four occasions, spent the first half of this season on loan at League One outfit Scunthorpe United.

And although he is looking forward to making the step up in the Championship, starting with this weekend's home clash with Ipswich Town, Norwood still has dreams of playing for Premier League champions United in the future.

"I just want to come and play as may games as possible," said Norwood. "It's a massive club and I am grateful for the opportunity to play here.

"It was a good experience to play in League One because it is completely different to the Premier League and the reserves.

"The Championship is different again so hopefully I can adapt to this level and help us climb up the table.

"Hopefully I can force my way into the team and stay there until the end of the season.

"Of course, I'd like to get near the first team at Manchester United but I know how much hard work that is going to take and this is going to be a good experience for me."

Norwood trained with his new team mates for the first time yesterday (Thursday) at the Alan Higgs centre and he is already looking forward to making a good impression.

"I know Sammy (Clingan) from playing international football with I'm so he showed me around and all the lads have been great, very welcoming,” Norwood added.

I like to get on the ball, I like to play football, score goals and get about the pitch.

"I am an all round midfielder who likes to make some tackles as well.

"You've got to be willing to put the tackles in at this level, it's not all about playing your football you have to stop others playing their game too."

The Sky Blues look set to be without Hreidarsson for this Saturday's meeting with Ipswich after the defender picked up a shoulder injury during the 2-1 defeat at Blackpool in mid-week.

Chris Hussey remains sidelined and will return to training next week and Conor Thomas is also a doubt.
