A manhunt has been launched to find Andrew Farndon, 26, who is from Coventry. (s)

A NATIONWIDE manhunt is over after a prisoner from Coventry was captured by police.

Andrew Farndon was detained by police in Scotland on Saturday, three days after going on the run from a hospital in Suffolk.

A gunman had threatened prison officers who were forced to release the 26-year-old, an inmate at category C HMP Highpoint.

Reports had suggested he stabbed himself in the shoulder in a pre-planned operation.

A further four people - three men aged 16, 33, 43 and a 44-year-old woman - have been arrested and detained in police custody for allegedly attempting to pervert the ends of justice.

They are due to appear at Ayr Sheriff Court today (Monday).

On Wednesday evening, hospital reception staff called police to say they could see a man pointing a gun at two prison officers outside the A&E department.

A female prison officer, who was handcuffed to Farndon, was forced to release him after a gun was pointed to her head.

The pair then ran through the car park and are thought to have escaped in a dark coloured car.

Farndon was convicted in his absence at Coventry Crown Court in 2007, after jumping from the dock.

He was later found at an address in Reading and jailed indefinitely for GBH with intent, dangerous driving and aggravated vehicle taking.
