LOCAL bragging rights are up for grabs next week when Coventry and Warwick universities face off at hockey for the first match in this year's Varsity Series.
The two teams will go head-to-head at the Skydome on Monday with Coventry hoping to make it a hat-trick of wins having beaten their rivals for the last two years.
Last year Coventry beat Warwick 4-3 but lost the overall Varsity series.
"Ice hockey’s a great opener for Varsity and a chance for us to win one over our closest rivals," said Ali Burr, vice president of Coventry's student activities.
"We are the underdogs for Varsity but the ice hockey shows we’ve got some bite. We want as many local people to support us as
possible.
"Whilst there might be two universities in the city, only one of them proudly wears the name Coventry on its sleeve and that’s the one we’d like to see Coventrians get behind."
For 2012 there are three main Varsity events – ice hockey, netball/basketball and football (men's and women’s) - with the winner taking home the coveted Varsity Trophy. The football final will be held at the Ricoh Arena for the first time.
